The Delaware Mathematics Coalition & University of Delaware’s Mathematics & Science Education Resource Center are pleased to welcome mathematics educator, researcher, and nationally-renowned author Dr. Jo Boaler to a statewide event for K-16 educators, state leaders, and community members.
Date: Saturday November 9, 2013
Location: Dover Downs, Ballroom C
Time: 8:30 a.m. -2:00 p.m. Registration: $25
Dr. Boaler is a Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford University and has done extensive research in mathematics teaching and learning. She is particularly interested in how different teaching approaches impact students’ learning. Her talk, “Promoting Equity through Teaching for a Growth Mindset,” will inspire and challenge our community to consider ways in which our schools can move toward more effective and equitable learning environments. Key ideas in her presentation will include:
- Promoting enhanced student achievement through a “mindset” intervention approach to mathematics instruction;
- Fostering the habits of mind that mathematicians possess: perseverance, curiosity, a sense of self-efficacy, and persistence; and
- Examining the implications of cognitive science research as it relates to moving toward more equitable and effective teaching and learning environments.
Dr. Boaler is also the author of several best selling books including “What’s Math Got to Do With It: How Parents and Teachers Can Help Children Learn to Love their Least Favorite Subject” and “Connecting Mathematical Ideas: Middle School Video Cases to Support Teaching & Learning”. During the day, the community will not only engage in Professor Boaler’s talk, but they will also participate in a panel discussion with key state and national leaders who are working to support substantive improvements in the quality of teaching and learning in our classrooms. This statewide professional learning opportunity will serve as a catalyst for the fundamental work that needs to be done to support improved learning outcomes in our school system.
